Linking the Flagstaff community to healthy local & regional food

Flagstaff Youth Gardens

Since its inception in 2004, Flagstaff Youth Gardens (FYG) has provided financial, conceptual, and on-the-ground support to Flagstaff teachers and schools interested in creating, supporting and maintaining on-site youth gardens.  FYG has distributed mini grants to local schools interested in starting youth gardens.  We have provided experienced gardeners to consult and support local educators starting and maintaining school gardens, and we have created and distributed to interested teachers a K through high school gardening curriculum aligned with state standards that is regionally appropriate to the Flagstaff growing area.

In addition, FYG has hired between 10-12 paid high school student interns over several summers, to work and learn over the summer holiday in the gardens at Flagstaff Leadership Academy (FALA) and the New Start School.  To date we have awarded garden mini grants to support youth gardens in 14 Flagstaff schools.

K-12 School Gardening Curriculum

FYG has created and distributes a K to 12 gardening curriculum that is aligned with Arizona state standards and approved for use by the Flagstaff Unified School District. The curriculum is regionally appropriate to the Flagstaff growing area and includes curricula about Hopi and Navajo agricultural practices.

Flagstaff Foodlink’s curriculum was made possible with support from the Flagstaff Community Foundation and individual donors. A special thanks to Kirsten Novo and Jessica McGrath who worked tirelessly on the development of this wonderful curriculum and to others who are working to ensure that it is used!
